The Dhaka Times Desk At least 23 people have been killed in a ferry fire in Indonesia. A few others were injured. Such an incident happened near the capital Jakarta on Sunday.
Police said the ferry, 'The Jahro Express', caught fire shortly after it left Muara Angke port in north Jakarta with about 250 passengers on board. It is believed that the fire started due to a short circuit in the generator on board the ferry.
A passenger told the media, 'Suddenly black smoke started coming out and this smoke covered the entire cabin. Panicked passengers rushed to the deck to lower the dinghy on the ferry. But in no time the fire spread from the oil storage area of the ferry.'
Hendra Sudirman, head of Jakarta's rescue operations agency, said there were 248 people on board the ferry. Among them, 32 injured people were treated at a hospital in Jakarta.
It should be noted that sea accidents often occur in Indonesia. The number of casualties in these accidents is also increasing day by day due to excess passengers and lack of adequate life jackets.
