The Dhaka Times Desk This time Bangladeshi-American girl Munira Ahmed has become the image of the anti-Donald Trump movement.
After taking oath last Friday, millions of people protested against the newly elected President Donald Trump with a poster containing the picture of this Bangladeshi-American girl Munira.
According to British daily Guardian, 32-year-old Munira from Queens is a freelancer. Munira Ahmed grew up in Jamaica, New York state, USA. Around 1970, his parents left Bangladesh and started living there permanently. Munira was born there. Currently, other members of Munira's family have settled in Michigan.
The posters held by the protestors showed the young Bangladeshi-American woman wearing a hijab made of an American flag. Next to her are portraits of a young Latina woman and a black boy. Under each of them is written - WE THE PEOPLE.
An artist named Shepard Fairey did these portraits. He was the one who portrayed Barack Obama in 2008.
Munira Ahmed participated in the movement with anti-Trump last Saturday. "It says, 'I'm an American like you,'" he said. "I'm American, I'm Muslim, and I'm proud of both," Ahmed said.
After Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States last Friday, anti-Trump protests took place in various cities across the country on Saturday. The poster was seen in the hands of the protestors. Prior to this, Fair's portrait has been published across the pages of various national newspapers including the New York Times, Washington Post.
Munira said, 'It's an honor because of what the film represents. It's not against anything, it's just an inclusion. It says, I'm an American like you.'
Munira said, "During the protest in Washington, a woman from Congress approached me. He said, I am the woman whom he saw in this picture. I was surprised. Because I was pretending in front of people that it was someone else. who is wearing hijab Not really me.'
Munira also said, 'A group of girls asked me, I told them I never did it.'
The portrait of Munira was taken by her friend Ridwan Adhami. He and Munira took the photo standing in front of the 9/11 site while on a trip to New York.
That American flag hijab is very strong. This is because it will remind people that religious freedom is a founding principle of America. Not only that, America also has a long history of welcoming people who are victims of religious persecution in different countries.
