The Dhaka Times Desk Awami League leader and Member of Parliament Suranjit Sengupta passed away. The death of this veteran leader has cast a shadow of mourning across the world.

He fell ill on Friday and was admitted to LabAid Hospital. After that, he was under treatment at LabAid Hospital in the capital. Doctors declared him dead at 4:10 am today (Sunday).

Seventy-year-old Suranjit Sen Gupta was suffering from low hemoglobin in the blood. His condition deteriorated and he was admitted to the CCU of the hospital around 8 pm on Saturday. Later he was put on life support.

He was admitted to the hospital in May last year due to respiratory problems. Later, Suranjit Sen Gupta was also treated at the Massachusetts General Hospital in America.

Suranjit Sengupta was one of the youngest members of the Provincial Council of Seventy; He was elected in almost all the parliaments of the 4 decades including the first parliament of the independent country.

Suranjit Sengupta was born in Anwarapur, Sunamganj in 1946. In his early life, he got involved in the left wing movement. Suranjit was elected as a Member of Parliament 7 times including the Second, Third, Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth National Parliaments.

Suranjit Sen Gupta served as Parliamentary Affairs Advisor to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 1996. After Awami League came to power for the second time in 2008, he became the Railway Minister.

However, Sheikh Hasina kept him as a minister at that time, even though he resigned on the responsibility of the assistant's money scandal, but did not accept it.

Suranjit Sen Gupta did his graduation and post graduation from Dhaka University. He joined the legal profession after doing LLB from Central Law College.

Suranjit Sengupta, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Law Ministry, was a member of the Supreme Court Bar Council.
