At least 40 countries have already withdrawn from the discussion on this issue in the United Nations. US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said that national security may require nuclear weapons because there are many "rogue actors" in the world who cannot be trusted.
Nikki Haley said, 'My family would like nothing better than a world free of nuclear weapons. But we have to be realistic.'
Nikki Haley asked, 'Is there anyone here who believes North Korea will agree to a nuclear ban?'
Among the countries that have withdrawn from the new nuclear ban treaty are the United States, France and the United Kingdom. These three permanent members of the United Nations have always spoken in unison on global military and nuclear issues.
More than 120 UN countries have undertaken a plan to make the nuclear ban legally binding. However, it is opposed by several of their allies, including the United States, France and the United Kingdom.
In October last year, plans to reach an agreement on the legal obligations of the nuclear ban were announced at a UN conference. The United Kingdom, Israel, France, Russia and the United States then voted 'no' on the treaty plan. China, India and Pakistan refrained from announcing the decision.
Japan, the only country in the world, which suffered nuclear weapons in World War II in 1945, also opposed the plan. From the Japanese side, it is said that this agreement has no meaning without the inclusion of nuclear-armed states.
It should be noted that North Korea has recently been testing nuclear and missile technology despite the warnings of the international community including China.
