Communal violence is grinding on in western Myanmar six weeks after the government declared a state of emergency there, and Muslim Rohingyas are increasingly being hit with targeted attacks that have included killings, rape and physical abuse, Amnesty International said. In response to a letter sent by the Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh about the Rohingya, Myanmar's Human Rights Commission has acknowledged the killings and torture in Myanmar's Rakhine state. The Commission on Human Rights has recommended the imposition of economic sanctions to bring Myanmar to the negotiating table with the international community.

Rohingya ethnic cleansing has been going on for a long time in Myanmar's Rakhine state. More than 1 million Rohingya victims of persecution have fled to Bangladesh at various times. The flow of Rohingya towards Bangladesh is still continuing.

The National Human Rights Commission sent a letter to the Human Rights Commission of Myanmar on September 8 expressing concern about the issue. In response to that letter, the killing and torture of the Rohingyas was cited as the reason for their entry into Bangladesh.

Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Riazul Haque said: Although they do not want to admit everything, still in response to the letter they have admitted that they were forced to come to Bangladesh because of the persecution of Rohingyas in Myanmar. However, the Myanmar government repeatedly tries to say that they are not being tortured there.

The National Human Rights Commission has recommended an international inquiry into whether they are using the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army's August 25 attack on Myanmar police as a pretext.

The Chairman of the Human Rights Commission said that the Bangladesh government has given shelter to the Rohingyas only for humanitarian reasons, putting the country's security, economy and social sector at risk.
