Myanmar's 'four conditions' to take Rohingya back!

In a report of the Indian influential Bengali daily Anandbazar on Saturday, it was said that the Myanmar government is talking about strict conditions even though it says it has no objection to take back the Rohingyas who fled to Bangladesh.

The newspaper quoted U Kyaw Zeya, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar, as saying, U Kyaw Zeya said on Friday that the country's State Councilor Aung San Suu Kyi clarified the country's policy position on this issue on October 12. Rehabilitation and development work is also starting. However, the work of bringing back the Rohingyas will be based on four conditions. Only those who can fulfill those conditions will be taken back.

The four conditions that Myanmar has given to take back the Rohingyas. These are:
Rohingyas must submit proof of long-term residence in Myanmar
Those who want to voluntarily return to Rakhine must show proof that family members are also in Myanmar
If a child is born in Bangladesh, both parents must prove that they are permanent residents of Myanmar.
Only then will the Rohingya be taken back to Myanmar, Yu Qiyao said.

Yu Qiyao also said that they must show some evidence such as schooling, hospital treatment, employment records. Otherwise it is difficult to get back. Moreover, this process is time-consuming!

Yu Qiyao attended an international conference on 'Future of India-Myanmar Relations' in Yangon on Friday.

Experts from Kolkata's Institute of Social and Cultural Studies, Indian Embassy in Yangon and Myanmar Defense Minister's Think Tank also joined the conference.

But why is the Myanmar government imposing such strict conditions on humanitarian issues like the refugee problem? When questioned, the diplomat explained that the Rohingya problem in Rakhine province is not only a humanitarian issue, but security is also a major factor.
