The Dhaka Times Desk Burial of former mayor of Chittagong City Corporation ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury has been completed. Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader paid his last respects to him.
This influential and popular Awami League leader of the port city died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chittagong early on Thursday. He was 74 years old. The death of this thrice-elected mayor has cast a shadow of mourning on the political arena of the country including Chittagong.
On hearing the news of Chittagong Metropolitan Awami League President's death, people from various walks of life including party leaders and workers rushed to the hospital and his residence. BNP Standing Committee Member Ameer Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury along with BNP leaders also went there. Mohiuddin Chowdhury was buried in the Chashma Hill family cemetery after Asr prayers at Laldighi Maidan in the city. Before that, last respects were paid to Mohiuddin at the party office in Bad Juma city. Meanwhile, a commemorative gathering took place at the funeral at Laldighi Maidan. Laldighi Maidan gathers millions of people regardless of party affiliation.
Later in the afternoon, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader spoke to media persons in front of Mohiuddin Chowdhury's house.
At that time, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said, 'Bangabandhu's daughter Sheikh Hasina asked Mohiuddin Chowdhury to become a minister, but he did not agree. Our leader asked him to become a presidium member, but he did not agree.'
