The triple talaq bill was passed by oral vote in the Parliament of India yesterday (Thursday) despite fierce opposition. This bill states that if instant triple talaq is proved, the man will be imprisoned for 3 years and fined. And the minor children will be with the woman. Women can apply to the District Commissioner if they want.
This triple talaq law will be applicable in all states and Union Territories of the country except Jammu and Kashmir. On this day, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad raised the bill in the country's Lok Sabha. After four and a half hours of fierce debate, the amendment presented by All India Majlis-e-Ittahadul (AIMIM) MP Asauddin Waisi was also rejected.
He alleged that the center is doing injustice to Muslim women by bringing this bill. This will undermine their right to freedom. But even if this bill was passed in the Lok Sabha almost without a hitch, the country's government will have to gain enough momentum when the bill goes up to the Rajya Sabha.
