Last January 8 was the 76th birthday of this legend. Interestingly, in 1963, at the age of 21, he was diagnosed with the fatal motor neuron disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which doctors told him would give him two to three years to live. He also said that he might not see his 25th birthday again.
This is because most people with this disease die within three to four years of being diagnosed. However, proving the doctor's prediction and all past history to be wrong, Stephen Hawking finally stepped into the 77th year.
Although alive, Stephen Hawking's ability to speak and walk was taken away by a disease called motor neuron. However, this scientist did not stop there. In 1988 he wrote 'A Brief History of Time'. More than one crore copies of his book are sold worldwide!
Since Stephen Hawking cannot speak and move, he speaks through a voice synthesizer. The machine speaks according to the movement of the muscles in his mouth. In addition, he can write on the computer or generate voice through the movement of the throat and eyelids.
This physicist also stands as an example for disabled people in the world. Stephen Hawking also spoke at the 2012 London Paralympics. He also said that his disability gave him a new goal in life. In that documentary he said, 'Every day could be the last day of my life. So I want to use every minute.'
How did Stephen Hawking survive after only two years? Leo McCluskey, MD, medical director and assistant professor of neurology at the American ALS Center, explained. One thing to say about this man, he says, is that the disease varies incredibly from person to person. On average, most patients die within two to three years of diagnosis.
Some also have very long lives. Life expectancy depends mainly on two things. The motor neuron activates the respiratory muscles. Therefore, patients usually die of respiratory failure. Another cause of death is muscle wasting, which results in malnutrition and dehydration. So if you don't have these two problems you might get a long life.
We can only hope that this indomitable gifted scientist completes 76 years and enriches the world of science.
