The Dhaka Times Desk Great Ekushey is being celebrated today with deep respect for language martyrs. Today is Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day.
On this day, Salam, Rafiq, Barkat, Jabbar and many other unknown students were martyred on this day on February 21, 1952.
There is no other example in the world of sacrificing one's life for the sake of one's mother tongue. The tragic event of 21 February 1952 still shakes the whole world. That is why today the world is celebrating this day as International Mother Language Day.
On this day in 1952, the medical college area of the capital was buzzing with the slogan 'I want Bangla as the national language'. The streets were colored by police firing that day. The noble sons of this country sacrificed their lives for the mother tongue on this day. Their sacrifice will be remembered forever.
At 12:01 PM, first President Abdul Hamid and then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Speaker Dr. Shireen Sharmin Choudhury, Chief of the Triforce, laid wreath at the Leader of Opposition in Parliament Roshan Ershad Shaheed Minar. This special day begins with their garlanding. After that, people from all walks of life, including political parties, offered floral tributes at the central Shaheed Minar.
