The entire country will be in black-out for one minute today on March 25, commemorating the first watch of darkness on March 25, 1971, on Genocide Day. It has been informed that there will be a symbolic 'black out' across the country from 9:00 pm to 9:10 am except for emergency installations.

The present government has taken a program to switch off all kinds of lights for one minute in memory of those who died on that terrible black night of 1971. This decision was taken in a meeting held in the meeting room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat on March 11. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque.

The agenda of the meeting was sent from the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs to all the ministries and departments to implement the various programs taken to observe the two days, including disconnecting electricity for 1 minute on Genocide Day.

It is known that the decision of 1 minute black out will be implemented by the Cabinet Department, Public Safety Department, Electricity Department, Ministry of Information, Department of Mass Communication, District Commissioner (all) and Upazila Executive Officer (all).

Highlighting the context of celebrating Genocide Day, the Liberation War Affairs Minister said in the meeting that March 25, 1971 is a day of terrible bloody history in the history of the Bengali nation. That very night the Pakistan Army, like cowards, pounced on the sleeping Bengalis with brutal violence in the dark of night. At the behest of Pakistani military ruler Yahya, a military operation led by General Tikka Khan called 'Operation Searchlight' was the worst hellish massacre in history. More than any other day, this day is a unique example and a memorable day not only for us but in the history of genocide in the world. Killing so many people in one day is a rare event in the history of the world.

Bangladesh observes the massacre of unarmed and sleeping Bangladeshis by the barbaric Pakistan Army on the night of 25 March 1971 as 'Genocide Day'. The first Genocide Day was observed last year. A proposal was accepted in Parliament on March 11 last year to take the process of recognizing this day internationally. In view of that, March 25 was declared as Genocide Day on March 21.

Rare photographs and documentaries on genocide will be exhibited on Genocide Day. There will be special prayers and prayers in memory of the victims on the night of March 25 across the country. Apart from this, discussion meetings, ballads and cultural programs on genocide and liberation war have been organized.
