According to the news of The Times of India, there is criticism around the world about the spread of fake news in the media. For that reason, several countries have taken various measures. Following this, the Indian government has taken new steps to prevent the spread of fake news.

On Monday, the country's Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani said that journalists will be stripped of their official accreditation (ie accreditation card) if they are found to be fake news. In this regard, the official press statement said that the government accreditation will be revoked for the first time for 6 months, for the second time for one year and for the third time, the government accreditation will be revoked for the lifetime of the journalist.

The statement also said that fake news complaints will henceforth be forwarded to the Press Council of India (PCI) and the News Broadcasters Association (NBA). In two weeks they will check whether the news was really fake or not. After that the accreditation card of the concerned journalist will be suspended. It is also informed that if the news is proved to be false, punishment will be given according to the rules.
