And how many Rajiv have to die prematurely like this?

This is how drivers have been ruling the highways for years

M. H. Sohail And how many Rajiv have to die prematurely like this? If this question is put to the nation, no answer will be found.

Day after day, month after month, year after year will continue like this. There is no remedy for such actions. Because you can do whatever you want with the steering wheel of the car. Run as you like. Even if people lose their lives, the drivers do not have any headache. What happened in Rajib's case is happening all over Bangladesh. But there is no remedy. If the government is going to make any strict laws against the drivers, or take any strict measures then the transport strike will start!

And this is how the highways have been ruled by drivers for years. No one can say anything. This situation cannot continue. Most of the accidents happen due to the reckless attitude of the drivers.

On April 3, Rajeev Hossain (21), a second-year graduate (commerce) student of Dhaka's Government Titumir College, was cut off in a race between two buses. Rajiv fought with death for 13 days in Dhaka Medical College Hospital and gave up. Rajeev left for the land of no return last Monday night.

No one can accept Rajeev going like this. Another young man named Khalid Hasan Hriday (20) lost his hand when a truck passed by the side of the bus in Gopalganj. The hand is separated from the body of the heart and falls on the road. The incident took place on Tuesday around 10:30 am in the Betagram bus stand area next to Gopalganj Sadar.

Accidents happen one after another. And these cannot be completely called accidents. Because most of the incidents are due to the drivers being clumsy or competing.

# drivers need to be stricter on driving licences. Those who are giving licenses i.e. all the officials concerned should be held accountable. So that the unqualified person does not get the license through money.

# vehicle owners must be sure of license checks and experience when hiring drivers.

# Drivers must take care to never race on roads or highways.

If we look at some of the other factors responsible for road accidents, they are:

Absence of curved roads and dividers:

Most of the road accidents occur in inter-district highways of the country where vehicles are moving at high speed. These roads are not wide and there are no dividers even though the vehicles move in a face-to-face position. Because of this, when the vehicles come side by side, there is no safe distance between them and sometimes head-on collisions occur. To maintain a safe distance, vehicles have to leave the road and come down. Due to which the vehicle lost control and fell into ditch.

Defective and old vehicles:

The government took a step a year ago to remove defective and old vehicles. The vehicles, which are 25 years old, were supposed to be removed. But it has never been seen whether the government implemented it or not, if it did it was done in name. However, many old and unfit cars are running outside Dhaka which is identified as one of the causes of accidents.

Unrenovated dilapidated impassable roads:

Most of the roads in our country are in very poor condition. Highway roads should be up to date, durable, good or superior quality. May it be useful for everyone. However, most of the roads in our country are made of cobblestones. We have many examples of roads becoming unusable within 6 months of construction. We have to be more careful in any kind of road construction. Therefore, there is a need to increase the government's surveillance in the field of road construction. Moreover, nepotism and irregularities should never be accepted.

Driver Skill Development and Training:

Most of the accidents in our country are due to driver incompetence or recklessness. Even after the accident, no legal action is taken against these drivers. It is also true that the government has not yet developed the infrastructure to provide training to most of the drivers. It has become necessary to overcome this failure of the government and take training measures.

Driving Profession:

Driving profession is still considered as a low quality profession in our country. In particular, bus and truck drivers work 16 to 18 hours out of 24 hours, or sometimes more. Being separated from their families for such a long time and being on the streets, a kind of instability is created in them. Due to this, they become physically and mentally disturbed. Due to which they cannot concentrate on their profession. This is also considered to be a major cause of accidents.

Innovation in traffic signal system:

In our country, many things are still going according to the old system. One of these issues is the traffic signal system of Bangladesh. Modernization of this traffic signaling system has become necessary. Now the need of the hour is the inclusion of modern things like speedometer, weight meter, GPS technology.

Provision of up-to-date legislation and enforcement:

Amending the ongoing traffic laws of the country and its proper enforcement has become imperative. Illegal drivers, unfit vehicles are seized by law enforcement officers, most of them are legalized in exchange for money or cases remain on paper. These need proper application.

All in all, it has become necessary to look at the anarchy that currently exists in the transport sector. As the government is spending crores of rupees to build roads and bridges, another important responsibility of the government is to remove the chaos in the transport sector. If we do not improve the transport sector by bringing in the right system, my children will have to be the victims of the arbitrary behavior of the drivers day after day - which will never bring good to the country and the nation.
