Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi has said in a statement that the time is right to involve the United Nations for the 'safe repatriation' of the Rohingyas, after much debate over the return of the Rohingyas.
The statement was released from Suu Kyi's office overnight after a meeting with a visiting UN Security Council delegation on Tuesday evening, a BBC report said.
The statement said it would be beneficial for his government to ensure that 'refugees' could return to Rakhine 'without fear' if foreigners (the United Nations) could be involved in the process.
Suu Kyi also said that in this regard, negotiations are underway to make an agreement with the United Nations Development Organization (UNDP) and the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
Referring to the Security Council delegation's visit, Aung San Suu Kyi also said in her statement that, 'This is a turning point...Violence has no place in democratic Myanmar...We must make every effort to bring back those who have fled their homes and eliminate the root causes of violence. '
The Myanmar government and Aung San Suu Kyi herself have previously strongly opposed the involvement of the United Nations in the repatriation process. That's why analysts see this statement as a significant shift in Aung San Suu Kyi's position.
Britain's ambassador to the UN Security Council told the BBC that the visiting diplomats "made it clear" to Suu Kyi and Myanmar's army chief that if there was not a "credible" investigation into the incidents of torture, murder and rape in Rakhine, the International Court of Justice (ICC) would be initiated.
Last week, an investigative report by the news agency Reuters said that the US government is collecting detailed information about the rape and killing of Rohingyas, so that it is possible to present evidence when the Myanmar military officials are tried at the ICC in the future. Related analysts think that this threat is creating pressure on the Myanmar government.
A senior UN official confirmed to the BBC that talks are underway with the Myanmar government on Rohingya repatriation. He believes there may be an agreement on this matter in the near future. However, it is also commented that it may take several months to start the repatriation process.
