The Dhaka Times Desk Captain Mushfiqur Rahim has commented that Bangladesh has lost its own pride in Mohammad Ashraful's match-fixing and spot-fixing incidents. Mushfique said he found it hard to believe when he heard that the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit's (ACSU) had interrogated Ashraful and that Ashraful had confessed to everything!
"It was our pride in the cricket world that none of our players were involved in such unethical activities. Many have offered our players but they have turned it down, as well as giving us a reputation. Even if we played badly, no one could do illegal business with us. Although the investigation is still going on, we are shocked by what happened in the last few days."
“I was shocked at first, in disbelief at all. But when Ashraful bhai admitted in his media I could not hide my pain. I cannot accept his involvement in fixing international matches, even if BPL matches are excluded."
Based on the acknowledgment given to ACSU last week by BCB Ashraful has been temporarily banned from all sports. Mushfiqur himself was the captain in one of the matches Ashraful has been involved in fixing in the last eight years. But he claimed that he could never see these things. However, if found guilty in the investigation, Mushfiq said that he would be given a suitable punishment.
“I played with him for a long time but never understood when these things happened. Mashrafe Bhai said that he slept with Ashraful, he did not understand how this actually happened! If he is guilty, he must be punished. Our young players will understand that it was a big crime. You can never be unfaithful to your country, whether you are a small player or a big player!”
Finally, Mushfiqur also added that if Ashraful could return to the game, he would welcome him. "I hope he will come back to the world of cricket very soon", said the skipper.
