On Monday (May 14) afternoon, Mayor Saeed Khokon announced the price determination after discussions with meat traders on the bank floor of Nagarbhaban. This year, domestic beef has been fixed at Tk 450 per kg, foreign Boulder beef at Tk 420, buffalo meat at Tk 420, Khasi meat at Tk 720 per kg. As a result, compared to last year, the price of beef has decreased by Tk 25 per kg.
Chief Executive Officer Khan Mohammad Bilal, Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Sheikh Salahuddin, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Zahid Hossain, Chief Revenue Officer Yusuf Ali Sardar and Secretary General of Bangladesh Meat Traders Association Rabiul Alam were present.
Last year, the price of domestic beef was Tk 475 per kg, the price of foreign Boulder was Tk 440, the price of buffalo meat was Tk 440 and the price of Khasi meat was Tk 725.
In the press conference, DSCC gave some instructions to the meat traders. These are, slaughtering animals in a hygienic and halal manner as per the rules of the City Corporation in the month of Ramadan, not selling stale and rotten meat, using digital machines to measure the weight of meat in the shop, keeping a clean environment with the removal of all meat waste under own management and the price list of meat being visible. Rabiul Alam, Secretary General of Bangladesh Meat Traders Association, said that the price of meat will not increase during fasting. Traders will sell meat at the price set by the City Corporation.
Complaining that there is no designated animal slaughterhouse in the City Corporation, this business leader said, "Even though we promise to sell healthy meat, it is a pity that the City Corporation does not have an animal slaughterhouse." Extortion is being collected from the butchers in Gabtali. Every night, the meat traders are being extorted from the embankment. He drew the attention of the authorities to save the businessmen from the hands of extortionists.
He said, no meat trader anywhere will give less by weight, will not give. The country has meanwhile become self-sufficient in meat supply under the supervision of the government's Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. I hope to be able to sell beef at 300 taka per kg in the future.
