The Dhaka Times Desk US President Donald Trump has officially declared a national emergency. He declared the state of emergency to prevent Congress from appropriating money to build a wall along the Mexican border.
This type of emergency is usually issued during national calamities and wars. But with no other option, US President Donald Trump finally took this step.
The Democratic Party opposed the decision, saying it was a gross abuse of power by Trump and an illegal act.
In a televised announcement from the White House's Rose Garden on Friday, Donald Trump said he signed the emergency order to keep the country safe by stopping the flow of drugs, criminals and illegal immigrants across the southwest border from Mexico.
Due to the declaration of emergency, Trump can take money from different sectors like military or disaster sector and allocate it to build the wall.
Trump asked Congress for $5.7 billion to build a permanent border fence to stop illegal immigration. Declaring a state of emergency would give the president enormous powers that he could use to override Congress. Not only that, he can build walls as he wishes.
