The Dhaka Times Desk The environmentalist organization Parbhish Bachao Andolan (PABA) collected fruits from different markets in Dhaka and found that 95% of litchi and 100% of jam contain toxic formalin. Apart from this, evidence of presence of formalin has also been found in other fruits.

All this information was presented through a press conference at the Pobar office on Wednesday. Environmental organization PABA conducted this survey based on the presence of formalin in fruits in Dhaka market. In a press conference, the executive general secretary of Pobar said that from June 1 to June 10, mango, jam, litchi, apple and malta were collected from different markets in 35 areas of Dhaka. These tests have been done in the own lab of Pobar office. Formalin was found in almost all of the 14 jams sampled in the test. And in the case of litchi, the rate of presence of this formalin is 95 percent. Besides, 66 percent of mangoes, 59 percent of apples, 69 percent of Malta and 87 percent of grapes have been found to contain formalin. Paba said the high formalin content in litchi and jam is the reason why these two fruits are perishable. Therefore, more formalin is used in them to prevent their decomposition.

This environmentalist organization also said that they have conducted such a survey in Dhaka as well as in Chittagong. Evidence of the presence of formalin was also found in the fruits collected from there. This organization thinks that the punishment of the traveling court for the crime of mixing formalin and chemicals in all these fruits is not enough. According to them, as a result, the traders are not faced with any problems that will deter them from these criminal activities.
