American Airlines has announced that it will use new bag-scanning machines that use the same technology as CT scanners to scan passengers' luggage at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. This device provides a 3D image of the contents of a bag. According to the authorities, this technology can be effective by the end of this July.
These new scanner machines will be used at the airport's 8 security checkpoint terminals. The machine can take a 360 degree rotated image of a bag. American Airlines said the machine could be equipped with more advanced technology to detect explosives and other contraband items.
TSA manager David Pecox said the machine will allow liquids, gels, aerosols, and laptops in bags. And passengers don't even have to take anything out of their bags. In this case, the security system of the airport will be improved and the work can be done quickly. According to the TSA, 15 more CT scanner machines will be added to the airport by the end of the year. And there are plans to purchase 240 of these scanner machines in 2019 at a cost of US$300,000 each. Besides, this machine has also been experimentally tested at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
