This is possible through DC Combo Fast Charger developed by Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
The combo connector has two larger pins placed below the former five-pin AC socket. So that direct 480 volts can be charged. Older vehicles will be able to charge using the new connector. The new invention has shown success in experiments. General Motors' Britt Gross said the DC Combo Fast Charger has changed the landscape. During tea break you can leave your vehicle at the charging station and get your vehicle fully charged in 10-20 minutes.
The technology was first adopted by BMW and General Motors. Apart from the two companies, Ford, Chrysler, Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche are planning to adopt the innovation in upcoming new vehicles.
