Today we will try to understand the benefits of Five Why Theory with the help of an example. Suppose you are the managing director of an organization. Your company has faced heavy losses in the current year. But you still don't know the real reason why the company suffered such losses.
You call the manager to find out the root cause of the loss. Now you will find the root cause of the loss by applying the Five Why Rules.
1. You will first ask the manager why our company has faced loss? The manager might reply, "We couldn't deliver the product on time."
2. You ask again, “Why couldn't we deliver the product on time?” He might reply, "We couldn't produce the product on time."
3. You will ask again, “Why couldn't we produce the product on time?” He might reply, "We could not procure the raw material in time."
4. You may ask again, “Why couldn't we collect the raw material on time?” He may reply, “The raw material supplying company delayed the export of the raw material.”
5. You may again ask, “Why did the raw material supplier company delay in exporting the raw material?” He might answer, "Because we couldn't pay the bills on time."
Now you have clearly understood that the main reason for the loss is that your company has faced this loss due to non-payment of bills to raw material suppliers on time. One rule of the Five Why Rules is that you answer the question with the answer that the questioner gives. Then by asking just 5 questions you will find the root cause of the problem.
