The Dhaka Times Desk Canadian lawmakers have voted unanimously to declare the Myanmar military's ethnic cleansing campaign against the Rohingya a genocide.
Basically through it the members of the House of Commons approved the data of the United Nations Fact-Finding Mission in Myanmar.
UN researchers have said that a crime against humanity has been committed against the Rohingya Muslim minority. Top Myanmar military officials have again endorsed the crime.
Canadian lawmakers said they found the crime committed against the Rohingya to be genocide. Therefore, they also called on the UN Security Council to prosecute this incident in the International Criminal Court.
Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said, "We are leading an international effort to ensure that Rohingyas get justice and criminals are held accountable." This unanimous vote is seen as an important step in that effort.
It is to be noted that in August last year, after the attacks of 'insurgents' on several installations of the security forces in Rakhine, the special operation of the army started in the villages of the Rohingyas. In this incident, there were many allegations against the country's army, including murder, rape, disappearance. Due to which the Rohingyas began to flow towards the border of Bangladesh. In the last one year, more than 7 lakh Rohingyas have taken shelter in Bangladesh to save their lives.
