Mushfiqur Rahim remained the captain of Bangladesh cricket team after discussion with BCB President Nazmul Hasan. Mushfiqur, who announced his resignation as captain after losing the ODI series in Zimbabwe in May, has been tasked by the BCB to continue with the captaincy until the end of this year, which means he is also captaining the series against New Zealand on home soil next October.
A few days after resigning Mushfiq admitted that his decision was wrong. The board also said it would investigate the matter. However, talks between Mushfiqur and Papon finally put an end to all the confusion over the captaincy.
BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus said, “The tenure of Mushfiq and Mahmudullah as captain and vice-captain has ended recently. Mushfiq spoke to the board president, where he agreed to lead the Bangladesh team. So it has been decided to retain him and Mahmudullah as captain and vice-captain till December 31, 2013."
If he agrees, there should be no hesitation in reinstating Mushfiqur, because under his leadership, Bangladesh won the ODI series with West Indies last year, defeated Zimbabwe in the Test, drew the Test and ODI series with Sri Lanka. However, Mahmudullah's batting form was not good in Sri Lanka or Zimbabwe, but still he is trusted.
The captaincy issue was one of the main topics discussed in the 6-hour BCB ad-hoc committee meeting on Wednesday. Another important decision was also taken in the meeting and that is to keep Shane Jurgensen as the head coach till the 2015 World Cup. Jurgenson, who has been in charge since Richard Pybus left the job last October, is believed to be a good influence on the team.
The three-member selection committee will remain in office till next September. The term of office of Akram Khan, Minhajul Abedin and Habibul Bashar in those positions will end on June 30, but they will select the team for the New Zealand series. However, from what is known, the possibility of a change in the selection panel after September is very unlikely. The cricket operations committee of the board also talked about increasing the selection panel to five members a few days ago, but they did not make any proposal in the meeting.
The second phase of the Super League will begin immediately after New Zealand's tour of Bangladesh, and the upcoming 2013–14 Premier Division League will take place after the 2014 T20 World Cup.
A request will be made to the National Sports Council to start the BCB elections very soon. BCB is hoping that the election will be announced within the next 30 days.
