The Dhaka Times Desk Mushfiqur Rahim admitted that it was a mistake to announce the resignation of the captaincy in a quick decision. Along with that, he also said that he will perform his duties properly until Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) re-appoints him as captain.
After the series loss to Zimbabwe in the third ODI last May 8, Mushfiqur told his teammates and the media that he would no longer captain the Bangladesh team after the tour of Zimbabwe. However, Mushfiq withdrew the previous decision when Bangladesh won the desired 34-run match in the second T20 match at Bulawayo, known as the home ground last Sunday. At the same time, he withdrew from the previous allegations made about the team's teamwork.
"After making the announcement I felt I made a mistake, I should have discussed with those (BCB) who have entrusted the responsibility to me and then take a decision." Mushfiq also said, “I have been contacted by BCB, they have requested me to take the final decision after returning home. I have decided now, now the rest depends on them."
“Not about teamwork, I said this because of my emotions. At that time, I should rather work to encourage the rest of the team. But I did the opposite. No player should be held back at that time, it was my mistake. And my teammates have supported and encouraged me, I am proud of them. This is how we will overcome all obstacles in the future.”
A 335-run loss in the first Test of the Zimbabwe tour dealt a major blow to Mushfiqur Bahini, Bangladesh patched up that wound with a 143-run win in the second Test. In the ODI series, a big win of 121 runs in the first ODI strengthened the team, but then Bangladesh surrendered helplessly in two consecutive matches. As a result, Bangladesh lost the series 2-1 despite being ahead in the series.
Mushfiqur expressed his disappointment as the expectations with which the tour of Zimbabwe started four weeks ago were not fulfilled. He said, "We are disappointed because we expected much better results than this." Some things (the umpiring) just didn't go our way, along with some serious mistakes we made. After all that, we should have won the last ODI, but we made some bad decisions on the field and couldn't keep our cool. We have a lot to learn from this unexpected visit!”
The next international tour of Bangladesh cricket team is in October. But before that, everyone is hoping that BCB will talk to Mushfiqur, identify the team's problems and solve them.
