The Dhaka Times Desk The rescue operation of the worst Savar tragedy has ended. In the accident that happened on the 24th of last month, 2500 people were rescued alive and 1127 bodies were recovered. 556 people are still missing.
Yesterday, the army announced the completion of the rescue work of the Rana Plaza accident in Savar on May 13. The army officer in charge of the rescue operation has officially handed over the responsibility to the local administration. Rescue work was going on here for the last 20 days under the supervision of the army.
According to the draft list of garment owners' association BGMEA, at least 4,109 workers were employed in the five garment factories in Rana Plaza. Their account is also not final. The leaders of the organization said that this list will be updated after verification. According to the draft list, at least 556 people are missing till yesterday.
According to the information of the control center of the army and the district administration, 3 thousand 553 people have been rescued alive and dead till the end of the rescue operation. Among them, 1,127 bodies were found. Two thousand 438 people were rescued alive. 834 dead bodies have been handed over. 267 dead bodies were buried as bereavement. There are 24 dead bodies in two hospital morgues. Among them, 12 people died in medical condition.
Yesterday evening, army rescue teams reached under the rubble of the building with the help of heavy machinery and searched there. However, no body was found in the basement. The end of the rescue operation was then announced. They will explain the ruins of Rana Plaza to the Dhaka district administration at 6 am on Tuesday. Then they will leave the place after the prayer meeting at 1:15 pm. This information was given in a press conference of the Ninth Infantry Division of the army yesterday.
2 rescue workers died
A rescue worker named Ijaz Uddin Kaykobad was injured by fire while saving Kushtiyar Sahana on the 5th day of rescue. He was later taken to Singapore General Hospital where he died. He was brought to the country and buried with state honors. On the other hand, a rescue worker named Babu dies mysteriously.
Relatives are still searching for the missing workers
Yesterday afternoon, it was announced through the microphone in the school ground that the control center of the district administration established there will be closed at 6 pm. The relatives of the missing workers should contact the Upazila Parishad on Tuesday morning. Even after this announcement, the relatives did not leave the field.
