The magical dunes of Meteora in mainland Greece. Especially for those who love to climb mountains, this area is called heaven! For example there is a man named Vangelis Batsius. He lives in a small town called Kastraki at the foot of the mountain.
Vangelis Batsius says, 'Mountain climbing is my life and everything. When you wake up and see the mountain, you have to ride on it! And that's why I love this place so much.'
Not today, about 2 million years ago, these dunes were formed by the accumulation of stones, sand and clay from the flow of a river.
Aristides Mitronatius was for many years the president of the Association of Mountaineers in Meteora. He still climbs the mountain. He often met local people there. Vangelis Batsios and his friend Christos Survakas were preparing to climb the mountain.
Christos Survacas climbs one of the most beautiful of Meteora's nearly 800 routes. His friend was taking care of his safety while climbing this 250 meter high hill.
"It's a taste of liberation," Christos said. Ways to know yourself, know your limits and overcome them. Finding ways to think outside of traditional ways of thinking. Much like yoga. Strive for comfort while doing asana exercises. I can't think of life without climbing the mountain!'
Climbing the mountain is like an addiction for them. It's a safe bet that Christos Survakas and Christos Bataloiannis will be climbing this peak again and again in the years to come.
