At least 1,600 guests who came to stay at the hotel have been subjected to pornography on hidden cameras! The country's police have so far arrested 4 people on suspicion of secretly recording these videos
Very small or mini cameras were placed in hotel room televisions, hair dryer handles and plug sockets in fancy ways so that they could not be detected by the naked eye.
It is also known that the criminals used to earn as much as 6 thousand 200 dollars from these videos recorded without the knowledge of the guests.
If the four arrested suspects are found guilty in court, each of them could face up to 10 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.
In recent years, sex and nudity has become an epidemic in South Korea. The common people of the country have been protesting against these immoral activities.
In an interview given to the media BBC, the Korean police said that they found out during the preliminary investigation that the criminals installed these mini cameras in different rooms of at least 30 hotels in 10 cities in South Korea in August last year.
As the hidden cameras were one millimeter lens cameras, none of the guests realized that they were unknowingly being victims of a heinous act like pornography.
Police said a website was created last November where the secretly captured footage was released.
Users of the videos get a chance to watch the first 30 seconds for free. Then they had to pay to see the whole scene. Basically this is how these illegal businesses were run.
The police also said that the perpetrators have posted more than 800 videos on the website so far. Moreover, they are also believed to have violated the laws of operating website servers abroad.
The police said they had shut down the website this month. Till then those people were earning regularly from 97 paying members.
Hide media captions and the use of up-skirt cameras is a huge problem in South Korea. A spokesperson for the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency told the Korean news media Herald, 'The police agency is working strictly and strategically to gather information from criminals. Mainly those who posted and shared the videos illegally. Because this issue is seriously damaging human dignity.'
Creating and promoting pornography is completely illegal in South Korea. However, surreptitious filming is believed to be on the rise due to the country's fast internet access.
Many of the videos are recorded by hidden cameras in changing rooms and even toilets, the country's police said.
In many cases, ex-boyfriends leave these videos on the website out of revenge.
In South Korea in 2017, 6,000 complaints of such secret video recording were submitted to the police. In 2012, the number of such complaints was only about 2500.
In 2017, the police raided and arrested 5,500 suspects for crimes related to hidden cameras. However, less than two percent of these people have been able to secure prison sentences. The rest have been exempted through some legal loophole.
In this way, one after the other, the secret video recording and the leakage of it has spread widespread protests all over South Korea.
According to BBC news, there were several protests in the country's capital city of Seoul last year. The agitators called for strict punishment of all those involved in this cycle.
