Liver dysfunction occurs due to excessive alcohol consumption, especially in diseases such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C virus-induced liver cirrhosis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, metabolic disorders and biliary atresia (drying of the gallbladder) in children. Liver transplantation is the process of removing a person's diseased liver and replacing it with a donor's whole or partial healthy liver. It is a complex and expensive operation. A healthy person between the ages of 18-65 can donate part of a liver. To complete the liver operation, both the donor and the recipient have to be operated on simultaneously. So this operation has to be completed with sufficient time and skill.
The cost of liver transplant abroad is around 40 lakhs to 1 crores. Because this operation is so expensive, many patients die every year due to liver problems. However, this is the first liver transplant at the lowest cost in Bangladesh. A 20-year-old patient underwent a successful liver transplant at BSMMU last 24 Monday. He was given a liver by his surrogate mother. A portion of his mother's healthy liver was transplanted into the patient's body. At present both the patient and his mother are doing well. However, the patient is still under intensive care. 7 local and foreign surgeons participated in this complex operation. In this operation, the famous liver transplant surgeon of India. BSMMU Liver Transplant Department Chairman Professor Dr. Mohammad Zulfiqar Rahman said, this complex operation was completed as a result of 12 hours of tireless work of 7 surgeons. All expenses of this operation were borne by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital Authority. According to him, from now on, not abroad, liver transplant surgery will be available in the country for only 10 to 15 lakh rupees.
