The Dhaka Times Desk Despite strong claims by the Trump administration, the World Health Organization is sticking to its argument that the new coronavirus was not created in a Chinese laboratory.
On Monday, the agency said, Washington has not provided any evidence to support the US president's 'speculative' claim that the new corona virus originated from a laboratory (lab) in China.
Michael Ryan, director of emergency operations at the World Health Organization, said in a virtual briefing, 'We have not received any information or concrete evidence from the United States about the source of the virus. So from our point of view it remains speculative.'
Scientists believe the virus jumped from animals to humans, following an outbreak in China late last year. It probably spread from a wild animal meat market in Wuhan.
America's top infectious disease expert and director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, Anthony S. Fauci, echoed the World Health Organization's tone in an interview published Monday in National Geographic. He said that the nature of the virus does not make it possible to manipulate it artificially or intentionally.
President Trump has been increasingly critical of China over the virus, which first emerged in the city of Wuhan in December.

Previously, Trump said, he can say with great confidence that the virus causing the global pandemic came from a Chinese laboratory. News agency AFP reports that the United States' accusations over its handling of the coronavirus are only heating up its relationship with Beijing.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that there is a lot of evidence that the new corona virus originated from Chinese laboratories.
Meanwhile, China has denied all the allegations of the United States. The director of the US National Intelligence Office said analysts are still investigating the true source of the outbreak.
On the other hand, Donald Trump has been criticizing the World Health Organization. He even announced the end of funding to the organization. Trump said the company should be ashamed. They seem to be playing the role of China's PR agency.
