There are basically three species of bats commonly known as vampire bats. The reason for this name is that they are the only mammals that drink only the warm blood of living animals as food. These three species of bats have very little in common with other bats. It is believed that these bloodthirsty animals evolved once and all descended from a common ancestor.
They are found only in North and South American countries. This bat has a flat nose with a 'U' shaped notch. The nose also has a special heat-sensing organ that is able to detect where the blood flow is close to the victim's skin. Moreover, an infrared receptor has also been found in their brain, which is located in the same place as the sensory organs of snakes and can sense the location of prey in the dark.
Vampire bats usually feed on the blood of sleeping animals. They first make a hole in the victim's skin with their sharp teeth. Then when the leak starts bleeding, he licks it with his tongue. When a bat eats blood, a type of saliva is secreted from its mouth, due to which the blood does not clot and continues to flow out. Vampire bats can feed on blood continuously for up to thirty minutes without the victim noticing it at all.
The amount of blood that these bats eat does not harm the victim, but bat bites can cause infection or other diseases. It is estimated that a colony of 100 bats consumes as much blood as 25 cows in a year. They usually feed on the blood of animals such as cows, goats, horses, pigs etc. However, if given the opportunity, it also eats human blood. However, baby bats grow by consuming mother's milk, not blood.
They have a strong immune system against 'endogenous retrovirus', a type of blood-borne virus. These viruses insert copies of their genetic material into the host's genome. Vampire bats do not allow the virus to affect their bodies.
Being the only flying mammal, vampire bats can walk, jump and even run very well on the ground where other bat species forget about walking on the ground. That's why they rely more on the front wings than the hind legs. Basically, these wings provide them with the power to walk and fly.
According to the IUCN Redlist information, the blood bat is a non-concern species. However, many superstitions are prevalent in many places due to their blood-eating nature. Actually vampire bat is a harmless animal like other bats. They never harm anyone except for the need for food.
