The Dhaka Times Desk There is still no word on when India's war with China will end. So did Modi's swing-diplomacy ultimately fail?
What if India's diplomatic efforts are not meeting expectations? Political experts from opposition leaders say that familiar edge of Indian diplomacy is missing.
Since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister in 2014, he has spoken to Chinese President Xi Jinping a total of 18 times in various forums. Prime Minister Modi has visited China several times in the last 6 years. Xi Jinping also visited India. The picture of the two leaders sitting on a swing on the banks of the Sabarmati River in Gujarat has also gone viral. This has been called swing-diplomacy. Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping also held talks next to the seaside heritage temple in Tamil Nadu.
Even the top leaders of the two countries met without any set agenda. Usually, before the leaders of the two countries meet, diplomats work hard to fix the issues. There is a direction to that discussion. But Narendra Modi has broken that tradition too. They also talked without an agenda in a picture-perfect place in China. Sushma Swaraj was then the External Affairs Minister. After that meeting he was showered with praise in the Lok Sabha for this exceptional initiative. He said that it is not right to catch everything. By discussing in this way, the trust of one country towards another country increases.
Even in diplomacy, there is no guarantee that the table will not be broken. All rules can be broken if two leaders agree. Earlier, Modi broke the tradition and went directly to Pakistan on his way back from abroad to congratulate Nawaz Sharif on his birthday. Even then, he was praised for his controversial policy, but also criticized by his opponents. However, it was being said that Narendra Modi's policy has brought a new wind to diplomacy.
After becoming Prime Minister for the second time, Modi brought in Jaishankar as Foreign Minister. He is a former diplomat. He has vast experience. That is why he knew very well what to do in times of crisis.
This time, the opposition raised questions about the India-China border issue and India's diplomacy after the conflict. In fact, the opportunity for them to raise this question came first after the allegation that China had encroached on Indian land and then after India's diplomatic response after the bloody clash at Galwan. Opponents call it passivity. It was started by Sonia Gandhi. After the death of 20 soldiers, he asked why so many Indian soldiers had to die? The Prime Minister said how much land China has occupied in India. Rahul Gandhi's question is, the Prime Minister tweeted two days later, why did he not even mention China in it. This is nothing but an insult to the Indian Army.
In this way, various criticisms are going on in Indian politics. What is the game with the lives of so many soldiers? Such questions have also arisen. But one thing of all is that it depends on when the issue will be resolved after the meeting with China. Because this problem is not limited to China-India level now. India's borders with other countries are also affected. Negotiations with Nepal have already started. There has always been a push with Pakistan. Only India's relations with Bangladesh have always been good. However, India should also focus on maintaining good relations with Bangladesh. Bangladeshi citizens are sometimes killed indiscriminately by BSF firing on the Bangladesh border. They must be stopped. Ethical etiquette should not only be maintained, it should also be respected in practice. Otherwise the future can never be good.
