These accidents occur due to various reasons including natural calamities, mechanical faults, head-on collisions and carelessness of the driver. Many passengers lost their lives. Learn about some such launch accidents or launch drownings today.
MV Rajhansi
On December 29, 2000, on the night of Eid-ul-Azha, there was a collision between two passenger launches named 'MV Jalkapot' and 'MV Rajhansi' in the Meghna River at Shatanal area of Matlab Upazila, Chandpur. 162 passengers of Rajhansi lost their lives.
MV Salahuddin
On May 3, 2002, the passenger launch named Salahuddin-2 sank in the Meghna River near Shatanal, Chandpur. 363 passengers from Bhola and Patuakhali districts died in that accident.
MV Nasreen-1
On July 8, 2003, 'MV Nasreen-1', bound for Lalmohan from Dhaka, broke the bottom of the launch due to excess passengers and cargo in Dakatiya area of Chandpur. The launch sank with more than 2,000 passengers. In this accident, the bodies of 641 people including heads of 128 families were recovered by the government. However, about 800 bodies were recovered as private individuals.
MV Lighting Sun
On May 22, 2004, 81 people died in the launch accident of 'MV Lighting Sun' in Anand Bazar and hundreds of passengers died in the sinking of 'MV Digant'. Apart from this, 90 people died when ML Majlispur sank in Meghna river in Bhairab.
ML Shah Paran
In 2006, 19 passengers died in the 'ML Shah Paran' launch accident near the Meghna Bridge.
MV Coco
On March 28, 2011, a passenger launch called MV Coco-3 capsized in the Meghna river at the molehead area of Bara station in Chandpur.
MV Mirage
On May 15, 2014, the bodies of at least 22 passengers were recovered after the passenger launch MV Mirage-4 sank in the Meghna River near Munshiganj. The launch with more than 200 passengers was going from Dhaka to Sureshwar in Shariatpur.
Pinak
On August 4, 2014, a launch named Pinak-6 sank with more than 250 passengers in a terrible naval accident in Padma. Of the recovered bodies, 21 were buried (as anonymous) in Shivchar Municipal Cemetery.
Green Line-2
On April 22, 2017, the bottom of the MV Green Line-2 launch was hit by a cargo carrying sand in Beltala Kheyaghat area of Kirtankhola river in Barisal Sadar Upazila. The launch was immediately taken ashore, saving the lives of more than two hundred passengers.
3 launch dive
On September 11, 2017, 3 launches sank due to strong current at Wapda Chairman Ghat Terminal of Padma River at Naria, Shariatpur. This made 22 people including launch staff and passengers including three members of the same family.
MV Riyadh
The incident of June 22, 2019. On the Kanthalbari-Shimulia route in Madaripur, the bottom of a launch vessel called MV Riyad burst and half sank. When the bottom of the launch burst and water started rising, another trawler went and rescued the passengers.
Two launches collide
On January 13, 2020, two passengers were killed and 8 injured in a collision between two launches in the middle of the river in the middle of the river near Chandpur of the Meghna river on the Barisal-Dhaka waterway. Among the casualties, 3 injured were passengers of MV Kirtankhola-10 launch and the remaining 5 injured were passengers of MV Farhan-9 launch.
Launch sink in Buriganga
The latest incident happened yesterday (June 29) in the Buriganga river near Shyambazar area of the capital. This accident occurred due to the impact of a large launch (Mayuri-2). In this accident, 33 dead bodies were recovered and one person was rescued alive.
Things to do to prevent Corona virus
