It is reported that Noor Enayet Khan is among the few names that could come in the new currency. He is a descendant of Tipu Sultan, the ruler of Mysore state in British India. Independence-loving ruler Tipu Sultan also fought against the British. Noor's father Inayet Khan was born in Baroda, Gujarat, India. His grandfather was the famous musician Ustad Mawla Bakhsh Khan. Mawla Bakhsh Khan's wife Qasim Bibi was Tipu Sultan's granddaughter.
Now if everything goes well, Noor Enayet Khan, a descendant of Tipu Sultan of Sher-i-Mahisur, will settle in the British currency. A proposal in this regard was reviewed by Indian-origin British Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.
Noor Enayet Khan was shot in the head on September 13, 1944 in the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. At that time he was only 30 years old. When he died in a Nazi camp, he only said – Libert. Which means freedom in French! Noor was a British spy. Noor was brutally beaten and injured before being shot dead. Britain's highest civilian honor 'George Cross' was awarded to Noor Enayet Khan 5 years after his death. Noor Enayet Khan is one of the remarkable four women who have received such an honour. He was also posthumously awarded 'Croix de Gayre' (one of France's most important military honours). There is also a statue of Noor Enayet Khan in London's Gordon Square.
Apart from Noor Enayet Khan, black nurse Mary Seacole, who died in the Crimean war, Kulbir Thapa of the Gorkha regiment who fought in the First World War can also feature in the commemorative coins.
