The Dhaka Times Desk A man named Felix Bayamukuma has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing an endangered species of gorilla in Uganda.
It is known that Felix killed a 25-year-old silverback gorilla after entering a protected area last June. Not only that, Felix was also accused of killing a deer and a pig.
According to a report of Aljazeera, the name of the dead gorilla is Rafiki. It was Uganda's most famous gorilla. It was the head of the gorilla group of the national park located in the remote jungles of southwestern Uganda. Only a little over 1,000 gorillas are thought to survive there. The gorilla named Rafiki was very popular with tourists.
Confessing to the killing of Rafiki, Felix Bayamukuma claimed in court that he and three others entered a protected area with the intention of hunting small animals. This time, when the gorilla attacked him, he killed the gorilla in self-defense.
Sam Mwandha, executive head of the Uganda Wildlife Authority, said Felix's three companions are now in prison over the killing. They will also be brought to justice.
