The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), which supports low- and lower-middle-income countries in vaccination, has given this good news to 92 countries, including Bangladesh.
The Serum Institute of India (SII), Gavi and Bill and Melinda Gates have also signed an agreement to accelerate the production and distribution of 10 million doses of potentially safe and effective vaccines for low- and middle-income countries by 2021, Gavi said in a statement last Friday night.
Under this agreement, 100 million doses of Oxford-AstraZeneca and Novavax's corona vaccine will be manufactured and supplied to various countries after approval. And the Serum Institute of India will be in charge of this supply. That's why the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will give 150 million dollars to that organization. The initiative has been taken up under the 'Kovax Advance Market Commitment (AMC)' framework. According to the agreement with them, the price of the vaccine per dose will be as high as three dollars (about 254 rupees in Bangladeshi taka).
It should be noted that the United States and the United Kingdom are also trying to ensure the availability of possible vaccines by making advance purchase agreements with the companies that are ahead in the development of the corona vaccine. If the effectiveness of the vaccine is proven, it is almost certain that both countries will get the vaccine at the beginning. In particular, they have signed agreements with at least 4 companies that are leading the way in developing vaccines in the UK. On the other hand, even though the World Health Organization talks about getting vaccinations for everyone, they have not had any visible action so far. Last Friday, due to the initiative of Gavi, Bill and Melinda Gates and the Serum Institute of India, the international alliance on vaccination, the opportunity to reach the world's poor population with vaccination was created.
Gavi's chief executive officer. Seth Burkell said, 'Too often we have seen that vulnerable countries are always left behind in the race to get new treatments, tests and new vaccines. We never want that in case of corona vaccine.'
He also said, 'If only the rich countries are protected, then international trade, industry and society will continue to be disrupted by the pandemic. Our new cooperation agreement is an important step to ensure that this does not happen. It is an initiative to build vaccine production capacity for all countries, not just a few rich countries. We want other serum vaccine manufacturers to follow suit.'
It is noted that last week, GAVI's governing board finalized the list of at least 92 countries to be supported under the AMC. According to the tripartite agreement, if AstraZeneca's vaccine is proven to be effective, 57 countries on the GAVI cooperation list will receive it. If Novavax's vaccine initiative is successful, all 92 countries covered by the AMC (including 57 countries on the Gavi list) will receive it. Bangladesh is on the list of 57 countries eligible for GAVI assistance.
