Speaking to reporters, Trudeau also said Canada has long had concerns about China's human rights record. Ottawa is concerned about China's policies towards Uighur Muslims in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. Beijing's outlook is not at all positive for either itself or the international community.
In this regard, Justin Trudeau said that China has arbitrarily detained two Canadian citizens along with citizens of other countries. Canada will work with allies on this.
It should be noted that China's relationship with Canada deteriorated greatly in 2018. Ottawa arrested Meng Wanzhou, CFO of the Chinese company Huawei, at the request of the United States in December of that year.
Western countries complain that Huawei hands over all the data of its users to the Chinese Communist Party. Meng Wenzhou is also accused of violating US sanctions against Iran.
After he was arrested in Canada, Beijing arrested two Canadian citizens staying in China. They were later charged with espionage.
A Chinese court sentenced one of them to life imprisonment last August. The relationship between the two countries also deteriorated greatly over this issue.
