Srivijaya Air's domestic flight SJ-182 took off from the capital Jakarta at noon local time on Saturday. The plane lost contact with the control room just 4 minutes after take off. The plane is believed to have crashed.
Flight tracking service Flightradar24 said the plane was at an altitude of 10,000 feet when it went missing. In one minute, the plane suddenly descended 3,000 feet. The flight lost contact within 4 minutes of takeoff.
The Boeing 737-500 model normally takes 90 minutes to travel from Jakarta to Pontianak Airport, Budget Airlines said in a statement. The distance from Jakarta to Pontianak is only 740 kilometers.
It was raining heavily at Soekarno-Hatta Airport when the plane took off. The authorities also said that the flight was delayed due to the rain.
A total of 62 people were on board the plane when it went missing. Besides 7 children there were also 3 children aged 4 to 6 months. There were 6 crew in the plane.
A local government official told Kompass TV that a fisherman found what looked like plane debris in the waters off North Jakarta. Other news channels are also airing pictures of possible plane wreckage.
"We found some cables, a pair of jeans and some metal objects," a security official told CNN Indonesia.
An official from the country's search and rescue agency told Reuters that they were still not sure if the wreckage belonged to Srivijaya Air flight SJ182. At least 50 people participated in the search operation. They also said that the operation will continue throughout the night.
Indonesia's transport ministry spokeswoman Adita Irawati said in a statement that they are investigating the matter of the plane's disappearance. The plane took off at 1.56 pm. He also said that there was communication till 2:40 minutes.
