The Dhaka Times Desk A rare example of unity between the two countries was established by the reburial of the remains of French and Russian soldiers killed in Napoleon's failed Moscow campaign in 1812, 200 years ago.
In the western Russian city of Smolensk, the remains of 126 people killed during the bloodiest battle of Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 are being reburied.
The remains of soldiers killed almost 200 years ago are being reburied this year as part of France's biennial commemoration of the deaths of military leaders.
Descendants of the victims and dozens of re-enactors will attend the cemetery in the town of Viezma, more than 200 kilometers west of Moscow. Re-enactors will bring out the atmosphere of the wartime period. Archaeologists from both countries discovered the remains of 120 soldiers, 3 women and 3 teenagers in a mass grave in 2019.
The excavation was led by Pierre Malinovsky, head of the Kremlin-linked Foundation for the Development of Russian-French Historical Initiative.
It is thought that the three women, 'vivendières' or French troops associated with the expedition, may have administered first aid to the soldiers and served in the canteen, and the three teenagers may have been members of the orchestra.
They are believed to have died at the Battle of Viezma on 3 November 1812, at the beginning of Napoleon's withdrawal from Moscow before the horrors of crossing the Berezina River.
The ceremony, which commemorates and buries the war dead with a song salute, is expected to be seen as a rare moment of unity amid a growing crackdown on political opponents in Russia and tensions between Russia and Europe.
Descendants of French and Russian military leaders who took part in the war will gather here, Pierre Malinowski told the news agency, in this reunion they also remember those who died more than 200 years ago.
Yulia Khitrovo, a descendant of Russian field marshal Mikhail Kutuzov, considered a national hero who resisted Napoleon's campaign, also said 'Their death created equality; They are now all in one grave.'
Prince Joassim Murat, a descendant of one of Napoleon's generals, said the event would once be seen as a 'symbol of mutual respect' between the warring parties.
