The Dhaka Times Desk The system of zamindari has been abolished long ago. Even before the abolition of the zamindari system, the zamindars of many areas became weak. But Narail's zamindars had influence in the end.
The zamindars of Narail were extremely powerful. Zamindari was founded in Narail by one Kalishankar Roy. He was known as an influential person in Hinduism. Basically he was the real founder of Narail zamindari. His father's name is Rupram Roy.
Rupram Roy married the second daughter of Krishnaram Mitra of the traditional Mitra clan of Prasiddha Gwatali. Then Rupram Roy became the father of three sons. These are Nandkishore, Kalishankar and Ramnidhi.
Rupram took a job in the Nato Raj government at a very young age. Gradually he became Biswas Bhajan. He also got an opportunity to work in Murshidabad Nawab's court as a government advocate. By doing this he became the owner of considerable wealth.
Rani Bhavani, the zamindar of Natore, one day summoned Rupram Roy as their advocate to the court of the Nawab of Murshidabad. Ruparam Roy bought the Aladatpur taluk of Narail through the kindness of Rani Bhavani of Natore. Within this taluk, he built a residence at a place called Narail.
Rupram Roy built a market on the banks of Chitra river a little away from Basatbari. The market came to be known as Rupganj market after the name of Rupram. The market still exists under that name.
Among the three sons of Rupram Roy, Kalishankar Roy used to travel with his father to the royal court of Natore at a very young age. Like his father, Kalishankar was employed at an early age in the royal government of Natore. This Kali Shankar was the real founder of Narail Zamindari.
This Kali Shankar Ray was a cunning man with a fit body. It was not in his character to consider justice and injustice for his own success. He was a very skilled person in getting work done.
Then in 1793 the Governor General of India Lord Cornwallis introduced the Permanent Settlement. At that time a huge amount of rent was left in the huge zamindari of Natore. The estates were eventually sold at auction in installments due to rent.
At that time, Suchtur Kalishankar and some employees abused the trust of the zamindars of Natore and purchased the parganas under the zamindari area of Natore kingdom in the name and anonymously at the auction.
The parganas are Telihati, Tarafpur, Taraf Kalia, Roopat, Taraf Daryapur and other small Tomigati mahals. In Narail Mauza, Kalishankar Roy built big buildings, several ponds, drama temples and a huge palace in his father's small residence.
Kalishankar also formed a large Lathial army to increase his power, prestige and prestige. Most of the people who joined the Lathial Bahini belonged to the Hindu lower caste Namshudra community. If there was a need to apply force, then this baton force was used. Many times the goods of traders' boats were also looted by this Lathial Bahini.
The first judge of Jessore was Magistrate Henkel Sahib. A robbery case was filed in his court in 1784 AD in the name of Kali Shankar and his elder brother Nandkishore. Likely: Kali Shankar, enraged by business debts, looted a boat full of goods.
That is why Mr. Henkel called him a dacoit and submitted a report to the government. Some sepoys under Qutubullah Sardar were sent to capture Kali Shankar. Then a group of 1500 lathials fought with them.
2 people were killed and 15 people including Qutubullah were injured in the battle. A second time Saheb sent additional troops and Nandakumar was captured. Kalishankar ran away. He first hid in Natore and later in Kolkata. After many hardships, he was arrested from Kolkata. Then he was brought to Murli. However, he was acquitted in the Daroga trial.
Cow slaughtering was prohibited in the zamindari area of Kalishankar. If anyone slaughtered a cow, he was immediately arrested with batons. Then cruel torture continued. No one could walk on the street in front of his house with an umbrella on his head and shoes on his feet. This Kali Shankar was the real founder of Narail Zamindari.
Then in 1870, at the age of 70, Kalishankar made a pilgrimage to Gaya-Kashi. Pilgrims were always in trouble due to the origin of miscreants in Kashi. He could not bear that scene anymore.
Then he freed Kashikshetra from the pestilence of miscreants by punishing the tyrants with the scepter by various cunning tricks. Bring Kashi back to a peaceful state. That is why people of Kashi still remember the name of Kali Shankar Roy. Kali Shankar passed away in 1834 AD at the age of 85 in the holy Kashidham.
Kalishankar's two sons were Ramnarayan and Jai Narayan. Before going to Gaya-Kashi, he conveyed all his property to his 2 sons. Two sons died within a few years of Kali Shankar leaving Kashi. Ramnarayan died in 1817 and Jayanarayan in 1822.
All the buildings of the zamindars of the zamindar houses are now almost destroyed due to carelessness and neglect. Some structures still survive. But they are now almost on the verge of destruction.
Although on the verge of destruction, this manor house is essentially a piece of history. You can still go to Narail's zamindarbari if you wish.
