The Dhaka Times Desk Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an organization that works with journalists, says that China is the worst place for journalists in the world.
The reasons for this are said to be the Chinese government's continued internet censorship and unprecedented surveillance and propaganda against journalists.
Since 2002, this organization of journalists, RSF, has been publishing indicators on the basis of how independent the media can work in different countries of the world. This year, this Paris-based organization Reporters Without Borders has published the index of press freedom of the countries of the world.
The media freedom of 180 countries of the world is highlighted in this index. RSF reports that, in nearly three-quarters of countries assessed, journalism faces total resistance or obstruction. This has made it very difficult for common people to get accurate information during health emergencies.
The top 10 countries in this year's report in terms of free journalism environment are - Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Costa Rica, Netherlands, Jamaica, New Zealand, Portugal and Switzerland.
Apart from China, the other 4 countries at the bottom of the index are Djibouti, Turkmenistan, North Korea and Eritrea. Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Costa Rica top the index for media freedom.
In a statement, RSF Secretary General Christophe Deloy said, journalism is the greatest vaccine against rumours. Journalism is one of the most effective means of responding to rumours, across borders, on social platforms, on social media, so that common people can have an open discussion based on a variety of proven facts.
According to RSF, in 2021 China is still the "biggest supporter of media freedom". The country also houses more than 120 prisoners, in some cases in life-threatening conditions.
