The clashes began yesterday (Tuesday) morning after Karen rebels attacked a Tatmadaw checkpoint on the border.
The head of foreign affairs of the Karen National Union (KNU), the self-proclaimed Karen National Union (KNU), told reporters that they attacked a Myanmar military post on the Thai border early on Tuesday and captured it.
On February 1, the country's military seized power after removing civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Since then, Myanmar has been in turmoil. When the anti-coup protests spread, the country's army began to crack down.
Anti-coup protesters staged mass protests across the country. They are also supported by rebels who have waged an armed struggle for autonomy for decades.
One of Myanmar's insurgents is the Karen National Union (KNU). They have been clashing with the army on Myanmar's eastern border for the past few weeks.
The clashes broke out on Tuesday near the Salbin River in Karen State. The river separates Myanmar and Thailand. Residents on the Thai side of the river reported hearing gunshots and explosions from Myanmar.
"Our troops have taken over the Burmese military camp," KNU foreign affairs chief Padoh Sho Tho Nee told news agency AFP.
Karen rebels seized a military base last month. Then the junta government responded by carrying out several rounds of airstrikes. This is the first airstrike in Karen State in 20 years.
Fearing a counterattack from Myanmar, locals are fleeing their homes to other cities. Locals have started leaving the area since the fighting started in the morning.
The conflict in Karen has intensified in recent weeks. As a result, 24,000 residents have been displaced, of which at least 2,000 people have crossed the river and taken refuge in Thailand.
It should be noted that one-third of Myanmar's territory, especially the border area, is under the control of several rebels. These rebels also have their own militias.
