Currently, food prices have also increased in Myanmar. Specifically, incomes and wages also fell. Millions of people are deprived of basic services like banking, health care, social security due to the average income falling to 1.10 dollars a day. The worst victims of this crisis are women and children. If we do not get out of the security and economic crisis quickly, about two and a half million or 48 percent of the country's people will fall into poverty within this year.
According to the report, by the end of last year, the family income of an average of 83 percent of households in Myanmar had almost halved due to the corona epidemic. Due to the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, the number of people living below the poverty line has also increased by about 11 percent. In such a situation, the deteriorating security situation after the military coup, the human rights under severe threat and the development context, the poverty rate is expected to increase by another 12 percent by next year.
After the return to democratic rule in 2011, Myanmar's poverty situation changed dramatically. Due to political and economic reforms, 48.2 percent were poor in 2005, which decreased to 24.8 percent in 2017.
It should be noted that on February 1, protests have been going on in Myanmar after the army seized power through a coup d'état by removing the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. At least 800 people have been killed by security forces in the country's protests. And 4,500 have been arrested.
