A district authority in Thailand has announced that one winner will be selected through a weekly lottery from among those who receive the vaccine and will be awarded a cow worth 10,000 baht (Thai currency). CNN has reported this news according to the news agency Reuters.
The program was recently launched in Mae Chaem district of Chiang Mai province, Thailand. After the program was announced earlier this week, interest in the district of 43,000 residents has been strong.
District chief Bunlu Thamtharanurak told Reuters news agency, 'The number of vaccination registrants has gone from hundreds to thousands within a few days. Villagers are very fond of cows. Money is also available by selling cows.'
Bunlu Thamtharanurak said that 4,000 people have registered for the priority group. This group also includes people over the age of 60 and those already at risk. Vaccination will start from June 7. Other provinces in Thailand are also taking innovative initiatives to encourage registration. Prizes like gold necklaces, store discount coupons or cash are also being announced to encourage interest in the vaccine.
At least 1.64 million people of Thailand's 66 million population have already received the first dose of the vaccine. About 7 million more people have also registered.
The Southeast Asian country has recently seen an unusual increase in the number of corona virus infections. The total number of affected patients in the country is one lakh 19 thousand 585. 703 people died. Most of them died within the last two months.
