The Dhaka Times Desk A brave Saudi police officer has been hailed a "hero" after foiling an attack on an imam at Mecca's Grand Mosque.
Last Friday, an attack on an imam at one of Saudi Arabia's holiest mosques was foiled on live television. Police investigating the incident later revealed that the assailant imam claimed to be the "Mahdi (Awaiting Messiah)".
Security officer Mohammad Al-Zahrani managed to stop the imam from attacking him. The attacker was removed from the mosque with the help of other officials.
Police officer Al-Zahrani has been hailed as a "hero" and Saudis have thanked him for his efforts across social media.
A man dressed in white to perform Umrah (Ihram) at the Grand Mosque. Live television showed that as Sheikh Bandar Bolilah, one of the imams of the Grand Mosque, was delivering the Friday sermon, the man came running to attack.
Al-Zahrani was taken into custody by security officials after the move, a Makkah police spokesman said.
Despite the incident, Imam Sheikh Bolilah continued to deliver his sermon. According to Al-Watan newspaper, preliminary police investigation revealed that the criminal was a 40-year-old Saudi citizen.
It should be noted that such attacks have happened before. Last March, a knife-wielding man walked through worshipers chanting extremist slogans and stabbed a chair. He was arrested by the efforts of the worshipers and security forces at the scene. So far several people have claimed themselves as the savior of Islam i.e. Imam Mahdi.
The most high-profile incident in Saudi Arabia occurred in 1979. Then Juhayman al-Otaibi and his brother-in-law Mohammad al-Qahtani, who claimed to be the Mahdi, took hundreds of Hajis hostage in the Grand Mosque, leading to a week-long siege. At that point a full-scale attack was launched to break the siege, resulting in the death of the so-called Messiah and hundreds of his followers. Juhayman was arrested and later executed for his crimes.
