The Dhaka Times Desk Four people, including two women workers, died in a terrible fire at a carton factory in Rupganj, Narayanganj. Among them, two died due to fire and another died after jumping from the building. The fire did not come under control for 17 hours.
The fire that broke out yesterday could not be controlled by 17 units of the fire service. It is assumed that there is a flammable substance. Because of that, after the fire was brought under control around 6 am today (Friday), the fire flared up again within an hour. So far 4 people have been killed and at least 25 injured in this incident. Many people are still missing.
The fire broke out in the carton factory of a company called Hashem Food Beverages in the Kornagop area of Bhultar of the upazila at around 6 pm on Thursday (July 8). 17 units of fire service joined to control the fire.
The two workers who were burnt to death are Swapna Rani wife of Jati Sarkar of Nabiganj Buldoba village of Habiganj and Meena Akhter wife of Harun Mia of Golakandail new market area of the upazila. They died at the US-Bangla Medical College Hospital.
Another worker was injured after jumping from the third floor of the Mursalin building. The doctor on duty declared him dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 11 pm. The other person is yet to be identified. But many workers are still missing.
Meanwhile, the injured were admitted to various hospitals in the capital including local hospitals. Among them, 3 people are admitted in Dhaka Medical College Hospital and 3 people are admitted in Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
The fire service officials immediately said, 'It is a food beverage factory. Soft drinks including juice were made here. However, it is not yet known how the fire started.'
Latest: As of this writing, there is heavy smoke. The fire service continues to try to bring the fire under control.
