The Dhaka Times Desk Taliban forces have now reached within 50 kilometers of Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.
Yesterday (Friday) they achieved this milestone by capturing Pul-e Alam, the capital of Logar province. Saeed Karibullah, the elected leader of the Afghan parliament from this province, said that people are fleeing Pul-e Alam in fear of their lives.
According to a news report of Al Jazeera, while occupying Logar province, the Taliban first occupied all government buildings. They then arrested the governor of the province and the head of the intelligence agency.
Local councilor Hasibullah Stanakji and provincial representative of parliament Ahmadi said that the governor of Logar province Qayoum Rahimi fought against the Taliban for 12 hours. However, he did not get any other support from the government including airplanes. At one point, Taliban members surrounded him and later arrested him.
Meanwhile, as of yesterday (Friday) evening, Taliban fighters have captured a total of 18 provinces. The last province they occupied was Zabul. In the final moments of the withdrawal of foreign troops from Afghanistan, there is a massive conflict between the government forces and the Taliban insurgent group. Taliban fighters are taking over one area after another at lightning speed.
Meanwhile, Iran said that Afghan government forces entered its southern region on Friday equipped with several military vehicles. Pursued by the Taliban, they crossed the border and entered Iran.
