The Dhaka Times Desk Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina presented 3 proposals to world leaders to ensure gender equality. Yesterday (September 21), the Prime Minister presented this proposal at a high-level meeting with women leaders at the call of the President of the United Nations General Assembly.
In the first proposal, the Prime Minister said, I appreciate you for establishing the Advisory Board on Gender Equality. Now it needs to be localized. Gender champions are needed at every level, especially at the grassroots level, and through this we can also set an example.
In the second proposal, the Prime Minister also highlighted the need to provide adequate political and financial support to women-led organizations. Such efforts require the United Nations to play an important role.
In the third resolution, Bangabandhu's daughter added, "I call for a conference of leaders to strengthen the common agenda for gender equality." Not just us, but all leaders need to join in and make a strong commitment to advancing gender equality.
Highlighting the need to form a network of women leaders to ensure gender equality, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said it would act as a driving force to ensure gender equality.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also said, "I strongly feel that we can establish a network of women leaders, which will not only bring us together for a single meeting, but will also act as a force to ensure concrete steps to achieve gender equality and will also play a major role in women's empowerment."
Highlighting the negative impact of the corona epidemic on women, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that unpaid care work has increased. Gender-based violence has also increased. UNICEF predicts ten million more child marriages before the end of this decade.
Appreciating the role of women in dealing with the corona epidemic situation, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that almost 70 percent of the health care workers are women and they are in the front line in the fight against the epidemic. More than 80 percent of garment workers are women. Women are also the majority in the informal economy. Many of them have lost jobs and income. 2 million migrant workers including women have returned to the country.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed fear that due to the corona epidemic, the wheels of Bangladesh's hard-earned progress are in danger of turning backwards. The Prime Minister also urged to take urgent steps to deal with the negative effects of the epidemic.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that we have already announced 28 packages of 14.6 billion US dollars to keep the economy running amid the Corona situation. We have also increased social security programs. Most of the beneficiaries are women and children.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina highlighted the various steps taken by the Bangladesh government to provide special allocation for the women-led SME sector, to undertake various projects to improve the skills of women, to provide collateral-free loan facilities to women entrepreneurs.
