The Dhaka Times Desk Mullah Nooruddin Turabi, the Taliban's former morale police chief, has said that severe punishments such as beheading and amputation will be reintroduced in Afghanistan.
The notorious Taliban leader is currently in charge of Afghanistan's prisons. He told news agency AP that amputations need to be reintroduced for safety. However, he said that these punishments may not be given in front of the public like in the Nambai decade.
Nooruddin Turabi did not take into account the public outrage over the public beheading during the first phase of the Taliban regime. In this regard, he said, no one can talk about how our laws should be.
In the 1990s, Turabi is also known to have given severe punishments for the 'crime' of cutting the beard short or listening to non-religious music.
He said that the Taliban will not ban television, mobile phones, pictures and videos even if the practice of severe punishment is in force. Turabi is on the UN blacklist for past activities.
Turabi said that the ministers of the Taliban interim government are discussing whether these punishments will be given in public or not. After discussion they will formulate a policy in this regard. During the first phase of Taliban rule, severe punishments such as beheading were usually carried out in stadiums in Kabul or public gathering places such as Eidgaon. We have been criticized around the world for punishing in stadiums. But we never said anything about their laws.
