BTRC's new law: What to do if the handset suddenly turns off?

The Dhaka Times Desk Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is starting the process of banning illegal handsets in the country from October 1. Due to this process many handsets may suffer from sudden shutdown. If so what to do?

Meanwhile, BTRC has said that even if a valid handset is closed, it will be given the opportunity to register if it has the necessary documents. However, if there are no valid documents or the set is not valid, it may be deactivated dynamically.

But from now on, to activate a new handset on the network, its IMEI number must be registered in BTRC's National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system. Only handsets legally manufactured in the country and imported through legal channels will be registered under the NIR system. That is why smuggled and fake handsets cannot be used in Bangladesh network from now on. In such a situation, the question naturally arises in the mind of the user, is the phone he is using legitimate or illegal?

BTRC said in this regard, customers can easily identify valid or invalid mobiles by sending messages from mobiles.

How to know if your set is valid or not

Anyone can know the current status of their mobile handset. First go to the mobile handset and dial *16161#. When the option appears on the screen, then you have to select Status Check. An automatic box will appear, enter the 15 digit IEMI number of the mobile handset and send it. An automatic box with yes/no option will appear on the customer's mobile. You have to confirm by selecting yes. The return message will inform the updated status of the mobile phone/handset used.

Things you need to do before buying the handset

Before purchasing a mobile handset through any purchase medium (sales center, online sales center, e-commerce site etc.) the validity of the handset must be verified. That is why BTRC is asking to keep the purchase receipt of the handset along with following a procedure. If the mobile handset is valid it will be automatically registered in the NEIR system. Go to the message option of the mobile phone and write KYD and then enter the 15-digit IMEI number with space. Then send to 16002 number. The return message will inform you about the validity of the mobile handset.

How to register handsets imported from abroad

Handset legally purchased or gifted from abroad will be automatically activated on the network after activation in the country. Such customer will then be sent an SMS to register online with information within 10 days. The handset will be considered 'valid' if it is registered within 10 days. Otherwise the handset will be considered invalid and the customer will be informed through SMS.

Brigadier General Shahidul Islam, Director General of Spectrum Division of BTRC, said that the National Equipment Identity Registrar-NEIR has been launched on an experimental basis for 3 months from July 1. That time expired on September 30. From October 1, illegal or fake sets cannot be used in any way. Sets that have been used during this time will be attached to the server. New sets to be added must be valid sets.

According to BTRC sources, 1 lakh 10 thousand new mobile handsets are being registered in the country every day, out of which about 10 percent are being caught as illegal and fake. As such, 11,000 illegal and fake handsets are currently being identified in the hands of customers every day.

It is known, but these sets are not closing for now. As soon as these sets are activated, a message is automatically sent to the customer that his set is 'invalid or fake' set.

It is to be noted that BTRC has decided in the last commission meeting that no more discount will be given regarding fake or illegal handsets.
