The Dhaka Times Desk A high-level consultation workshop was recently held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) to identify key projects in international climate finance.
The workshop was jointly organized by the Economic Relations Department (ERD), Ministry of Finance and the project Improved Coordination of International Climate Finance (ICICF) implemented by GIZ on behalf of the Federal Government of Germany.
The workshop aimed to collectively identify the most important climate change related projects for the country by engaging relevant stakeholders from sectoral ministries, financial institutions and the private sector. The workshop also aimed to better inform stakeholders about the role of ERD in the process of aligning proposals for climate change projects with international climate funding sources.
ERD Joint Secretary Amal Krishna Mandal said in his welcome address, “We cannot demonstrate efficiency in scaling up climate finance, as the process is very difficult and time-consuming. This project is intended to enable us to get more funding from various funds. It has three parts, one by us, one by Prime Minister's Office through GIU and another by Bangladesh Bank. A Climate Finance Cell will be set up in ERD under the project.”
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture. Ruhul Amin Talukder said in his speech, “Our agriculture sector is in a very vulnerable state due to climate change. Bangladesh should provide adequate support from climate fund to mitigate this risk. We have already contacted various development aid agencies in this regard. We expect to get the necessary money from the Climate Fund through the combined efforts of various stakeholders. I thank ERD and GIZ for organizing such a timely workshop.”
Principal advisor of GIZ. Firdous Ara Hossain briefly explained the scope of the ICICF project to the participants. He said, “Bangladesh's hard-earned economic development will be at risk due to climate change in the future. Existing sources and amounts of funding will not be sufficient to address the impacts of climate change. ERD is actively seeking funding and exploring new sources The ICICF project aims to support ERDs in developing institutional frameworks, processes and capacities for climate finance.”
On behalf of the consulting organization. S. M. Munjurul Hannan Khan presented the ideas of potential climate change projects collected from various government and private institutions in this workshop.
